After experiencing financial crises, changes in the cross-straits relations, natural calamities such as floods and earthquakes, and transformation of social system, designers in Taiwan are being tested in different aspects of living before conceiving new ideas for their works of design. They often show care for Mother Nature and a deeper understanding the contents of living. This year designers from Taiwan have again participated in the 2010 Maison & Objet in the form of “Taiwan Design Pavilion under the theme “Taiwan Design +.” +” has a variety of connotations. In mathematics it is a symbol of “addition.” In religion it is shaped like “cross,” which divides the world into earth, land, water, and fire. In addition, it also symbolizes crossing, which means the fusion or integration of two different entities. The selection of the said theme intends to mark Taiwan’s diversified design under the influence of various cultural elements as well as multiple possibilities of Taiwan design. This year Taiwan Design Pavilion at the 2010 Maison & Objet comprises 12 design brands: 1300 only porcelain, 25togo Design, Biaugust, Bone, Eastern Mind + Western Objects, Gallery Chuan, QisDesign, Suiiis, The One. tittot, Yii, and Zuny. Works of 10 companies in cultural and creative industries organized by Council for Hakka Affairs under the Executive Yuan will also be displayed. Many fine products of furniture and furnishings with a wide variety of styles and features will also be present. Contents of the items of display include elements of Taiwan image such as woven bamboo ware, lacquer ware, and furniture pieces and furnishings with Oriental flavor. These items are added with fine works of design transcending Eastern and Western cultures and consisting of high-tech and humanistic ingredients. All items of display are a solid presentation of Taiwan’s rich cultural background as well as vitality. The infinite development of Taiwan design is best illustrated under the theme “Taiwan Design +.” n another note, the first congress since the establishment of Industrial Design Alliance (IDA), which is composed of Icsid, Icograda, and IFI, will be held in Taipei, Taiwan in the autumn of 2011. It is a grand event of global scale and marks a milestone for Taiwan standing in the center stage of international design.
