Viva Taiwan! “Taiwanese Design Pavilion” Debuts at 2009 Fuori Salone Milano “Roadside Feast” is a unique Taiwanese culture. Sheds, dining tables, and performance stage are built on roadside, with guests coming and going one after another. This is a pleasant sight with those attending the feast matched with cars and people passing by.
For the first time Taiwan attends 2009 Fuori Salone Milano with the installment of “Taiwan Design Pavilion.” The organizer plans to present “delicacies” of products of design with Taiwanese cultural flavor and different styles much like a roadside feast. It hopes that all visitors of the pavilion would utter “Viva Taiwan!” with high appreciation.

At the 2009 “Taiwan Design Pavilion” visitors could see the rendezvous of design, culture, and craft. With the four display categories of “National Cultural Relics,” “Craft and Fashion,” “Living Elements,” and “Branded products of Design,” visitors could see the achievements of diversified Taiwanese design embodied in furniture and furnishings of daily use on display.
In recent years rising Asian power has made its voice heard all over the world. Taiwanese design has gradually built up a good reputation on the international stage. A typical proof of this is Taiwan willing the bid to host the 2011 IDA Congress, Taipei. This congress would provide a platform of exchanges and dialogue among designers all over the world. This also marks a milestone for Taiwan design in the international design community.
Introduction on the Four Display Categories
Display Area of Design Inspired by the Museum
National Palace Museum houses 650,000 pieces of Chinese cultural treasure. It not only collects, display, and conducts research on precious cultural treasures, but also supports the development of the industry of creative culture with rich cultural contents. In 2005, it had created commercial products based on different cultural contents of the museum with the spirit of “Old is New” and in cooperation with foreign designers. Exquisite products of National Palace Museum have entered modern living in a refreshed look and are loved by the public, thus creating new value of creative culture.
Display Area of Taiwan Crafts and Design
Conventional crafts such as bamboo weaving, ceramics, weaving, and metalworking have existed in Taiwanese people’s lives for a long time. One can see the advancement of Taiwanese lifestyle through these crafts. A series of craft and fashionable products, entitled “”Craft and Fashion—Yii,” are on display. These products are the result of cooperation among top Taiwanese craftsmen and designers under the invitation of National Taiwan Craft Research Institute and Taiwan Design Center (TDC). Together they have instilled elements of design and Oriental conventional techniques in modern creative design.
Display Area of Brands of Taiwan Designs
Products displayed at this are all created by Taiwanese new-generation elite designers. Meeting needs of consumers, they have integrated user-friendly design with concepts of environmental protection and Taiwanese culture. Series of products have provided fun and a sense of beauty in consumers’ lives. Some of the products on display are winners of such international design competitions as the 2008 Red Dot Award (product design) of Germany; Good Design Award of Japan, and the 2009 iF Award (product design) of Germany.
Display Area of Creative Elements of Taiwan
Products at this area will concretely present everyday living spaces in Taiwan in the form of furniture and furnishings based on Taiwanese culture and historical relics and created with the inspiration of living experience. An aroma full of Taiwanese flavor will be created. Users of these products will be able to experience diversified sources of beauty of Taiwan.
